Veeam adds support for VMware alternative Proxmox to its backup software

Data protection outfit Veeam has confirmed it is to add support for the open source virtualization platform Proxmox, bringing more backing behind the VMware alternative.

Veeam, which has the largest share of the data protection and recovery market according to IDC, said it will deliver support for Proxmox Virtual Environment in response to strong demand from its small and medium-sized business (SMB) customers and service providers.

The company has carried out research towards this goal since at least the start of this year, as The Register revealed back in January.

General availability for Proxmox VE support is expected in Q3 2024, but Veeam said it will show off this new capability live during its VeeamON 2024 event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during June 3-5.

Proxmox VE is an open source management environment for enterprise virtualization that integrates the KVM hypervisor and Linux Containers (LXC), and provides software-defined storage and networking capabilities.

The platform has been drawing increased interest since Broadcom's takeover of VMware caused many organizations to take another look at their options with regard to server virtualization and management, in the face of price hikes and licensing changes.

Veeam said it is committed to extending support for new platforms in order to give customers greater freedom of choice. It made the decision on Proxmox following its recently launched support for Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager.

In addition to those, Veeam currently supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Red Hat Virtualization, plus the AWS, Azure and Google cloud platforms.

"This introduction of Proxmox VE support extends our comprehensive data management solution to address the challenges currently faced by our customers as they struggle with hard decisions in order to keep their data safe and protected, and their businesses running," Chief Revenue Officer John Jester said in a statement.

Not surprisingly, the news was warmly welcomed by Proxmox, with CEO Martin Maurer saying: "We are excited that so many customers are making it clear that Proxmox VE is the hypervisor that meets their business objectives."

Veeam delivering Proxmox VE backup in Veeam Data Platform "further validates and acknowledges customers' demands and desire for data freedom of choice," he added.

Proxmox last month introduced the latest version of its own open source server backup tool. Proxmox Backup Server 3.2 supports backup and restore of VMs, containers, and physical hosts, incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, and authenticated encryption, the company said. ®
