Microsoft was accused back in 2004 that it tries to monopolize the market by distributing the Windows operating system together with Windows Media Player. Forced by the European antitrust rules, the company distributed the N and KN versions of the OS, along with the full featured ones. The ‘N’ editions of Windows offer users the same functionality as the original ones, except they don’t have Windows Media Player installed by default and lack some important multimedia features.
Media Format Feature Pack for Windows 7 N and Windows 7 KN is part of Microsoft’s way out of this situation and have the slimmed down editions sold at the same price as the full ones. The package is intended for bringing back the Windows Media Format runtime onto machines running on Windows 7 N or KN and it is offered to the public for free.
Please note that this package does not include all the components required for fully enabling the media functionality and thus ‘upgrading’ the ‘N’ editions to the full version of Windows 7. This can be obtained by installing the Media Feature Pack, available for both Windows 7 N / KN and Windows 8 K / KN users.
What the Media Format Feature Pack actually does is re-activate the Windows Media Format support on the target system, which means that multimedia applications will be able to run Windows Media files once more.
Just so you understand what an ‘N’ edition user is missing out on, the absence of some features in the ‘N’ editions prevent users from playing multimedia content and perform any other media related task, including playing slideshows, capturing images, transferring music, manipulating playback and more.
The pack can prove useful for adding Windows Media format support on a computer running an ‘N’ edition of the popular operating system. However, the Media Feature Pack provides the same functionality and more and thus, can help you enjoy the benefits of the ‘full’ version without further costs.
